Commercial CCTV installation

Shops, offices, small business premises, farms and stables across Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Bedfordshire: commercial CCTV installation done the same way I do homes. A free survey, a drawing of every camera and what it will see, then a tidy fit.

Survey drawing of a small business unit with three CCTV cameras A top-down plan of a unit with a yard, a roller door, a gate and parking at the front. Camera 1 covers the roller door and yard, camera 2 the gate, camera 3 the entrance and parking. Next door and the pavement are hatched: masked, so they are never recorded. An example drawing: every camera, what it sees, and what's masked because it isn't yours.

For the premises you run

On Ubiquiti's UniFi Protect, with recording kept on a recorder at your premises and no subscription for the system I fit.

  • Shops

The door, the till and the stockroom, with cameras placed to see faces at the counter rather than the tops of heads.

  • Offices

Entrances, reception and the car park, recorded on a recorder on the premises, with app access only for the people you choose.

  • Small premises

Workshops, units and yards: gates, roller doors and the corners that are out of sight from the building.

  • Farms and stables

Yards, barns, stables and gates, often well away from the house. Cameras that see after dark, with a cable run or a wireless link out to each building.

More for businesses

  • Number-plate cameras

ANPR cameras for yards and car parks, reading the plates of vehicles coming and going. We can work with your gate installer so gates open automatically for number plates you've authorised.

  • Wireless links to outbuildings

Point-to-point wireless links where a cable can't reach, so far-off cameras record on the same system as the rest.

  • Watch it yourself

Live view and alerts on your phone, for you and anyone you choose.

  • Maintenance contracts

A maintenance contract for the business, so the system is looked after and keeps recording.

CCTV at work comes with data protection duties

Once a business records people, whether customers, staff or the public, UK data protection law applies to that business. In plain words, you need:

  • A clear reason for recording, and cameras that only cover what that reason needs.
  • Signs saying CCTV is in use, and who to contact about it.
  • Footage kept securely and for no longer than you need it, and a way to answer someone who asks for footage of themselves.

I set the system up with that in mind: cameras aimed at what you need, privacy masks over anything that isn't yours, how long footage is kept set on the recorder, and access only for the people you choose. The duties stay with the business, so it's worth reading the ICO's guidance for organisations using CCTV.

How a commercial CCTV job runs

Four steps, the same as for a home, planned around how the business works.

  1. 1

    Survey

Free. I walk the premises with you and we go through what you need to see, and why.

  2. 2

    Drawing

Every camera, what it sees and what it doesn't, where each cable runs, and a written quote.

  3. 3

    Fitting

In the evening or at the weekend if that suits you better, so the business keeps running. Cables out of sight wherever the building allows.

  4. 4

    Handover

The UniFi Protect app on the phones of the people who need it, and how to find, save and export a clip.
